What is corrosion, and how does it affect truck bodies?

Defines corrosion, identifies the conditions that accelerate it, and reviews materials, coatings, cleaning, and inspections that help protect truck bodies.

Truck Body Construction & Materials Updated

Corrosion is the gradual deterioration of metal caused by chemical reactions with moisture, oxygen, road salt, and other environmental factors. Left untreated, corrosion can weaken structural components, damage hardware, affect appearance, and increase maintenance costs.

Truck bodies operating in coastal environments or regions where road salt is commonly used during winter are particularly susceptible to corrosion. Water trapped around fasteners, damaged paint, or neglected repairs can accelerate the process.

Modern truck body manufacturers use corrosion-resistant materials, protective coatings, composite panels, and engineered drainage systems to reduce long-term exposure. Regular washing, prompt repair of damaged finishes, and routine inspections are also important parts of corrosion prevention.

Composite body panels provide an additional advantage because they do not rust in the same way as traditional metal surfaces, although other structural components still require regular maintenance and inspection.
